Excellent Environments for Healthy & Contented Organic Dairy Cows
As dedicated proponents of the Organic Path, we believe that creating organic businesses and local organic economies in all places is one of the most important ways to spread the beneficial effects of organic agriculture.
St. Vrain Organic Dairy Farm
Texas Organic Dairy Farm
St. Vrain Organic Dairy Farm.
Located in a nearly ideal environment for healthy cows, the St. Vrain Organic Dairy Farm is situated in the valley of the St. Vrain River North of Denver near the Rocky Mountains. With room for housing, milk parlors, organic pasture, and with nearby organic crop farming, this dairy is also adjacent to our organic milk plant (note: link here to milk plant page). A model of innovative vertical integration, this combination of organic dairy farm and milk plant ensures some of the freshest organic milk available. In fact, for those of our customers located nearby, our organic milk may only be hours old (fresh from the cow!) when it reaches their store shelves. The St Vrain Organic Dairy Farm milks about 4,200 cows.
The St. Vrain River is a beautiful resource of the Colorado Front Range that originates in the snow-capped wilderness of Rock Mountain National Park. We go to great lengths to ensure we help to sustain this unique riparian ecosystem.
Texas Organic Dairy Farm.
Our Texas organic dairy farm, like its Colorado counterpart, is located in an excellent environment for organic dairy production, about 110 miles West of Dallas in Dublin Texas. This region is the traditional “milkshed” of the Lone Star State, with a long and rich dairy history. Our organic dairy farm is adding a new chapter to this history as the only certified organic dairy in the region. The Texas organic dairy farm is home to about 2,800 organic milk cows, plus dry cows and young stock. There is also organic pasture and land for organic feed crops. One interesting fact about our Texas dairy is that the farm was once owned by Gene Autry, the famous “Singing Cowboy” of movie fame. Mr. Autry operated the farm as a champion cutting horse facility before the advent of the organic movement, but his colorful and sonorous heritage lives on. Another “fun fact” about Dublin TX is its fame as the original home of Dr Pepper. A small corner drugstore in town marks the spot where this effervescent beverage was first concocted and served.
For both of our organic dairy farms, mild seasons and a relatively dry climate help to reduce the incidence of many common cattle afflictions, such as bacterial infections, external and internal parasites and pests. Our cows are able to live outdoors all year round. Ideal for the growing of our supplemental feed crops, feed grown in these areas is often nutritionally-superior to the same feed grown in other areas.
We have a comprehensive sustainability program in place for our organic dairies that tends to our waste management and water resources.
